Why this site exists

Most “best SEO agency” lists are advertising in disguise

Owners call us after paying six months of retainers for reports nobody could explain. So we built the checklist we wished existed: reproducible scoring, real client references, and a written record of what each agency is genuinely good at.

01

Evidence over adjectives

Every score traces back to something checkable: case study data, client references, sample deliverables, contract terms and reporting quality. If a claim cannot be verified, it does not count.

02

Independent by design

We do not sell ranking positions, and vendors cannot buy a review. Our revenue comes from optional research reports and consulting, which keeps the list clean.

03

Written for owners

No jargon walls. Each profile explains what the agency does well, who it suits, what it costs, and where it is a poor fit — in plain English.

04

Specialisation matters

An agency that wins for a national e-commerce catalogue may be wrong for a three-branch dental practice. We match vendors by industry, footprint and budget band.

05

Contracts read closely

We flag auto-renewals, ownership of assets, exit clauses and reporting obligations before you sign anything, because that is where owners get hurt.

06

Re-scored quarterly

Teams change. Every ranked vendor is re-checked each quarter and can drop off the list if quality slips or references stop confirming results.

Our process

How a vendor gets onto the list

  1. Screening. We check registration, years trading, team size, service claims and any history of penalties or complaints.
  2. Deliverable review. Agencies submit anonymised audits, content briefs and monthly reports. We grade clarity, depth and honesty.
  3. Reference calls. We speak to at least three current or recent clients per vendor, off the agency's script where possible.
  4. Scoring & publication. Nineteen criteria are scored, weighted and published with notes so you can see the reasoning.

In their words

What owners tell us afterwards

“We had two proposals that read identically. The review call took forty minutes and saved us from a twelve-month auto-renew we had not noticed.”

DMDana M. · Owner, three-location dental group, Alabama

“The shortlist was three names, not thirty. That was the point. We hired the second one and traffic is up in Bing and Google alike.”

RKRay K. · Director of marketing, industrial supplier, Georgia

“Their audit was blunt about our own site being the problem. Not what I wanted to hear, but it was the right call.”

SLSofia L. · Founder, online homeware store, Tennessee

A local desk with a national brief

Our office sits on North Hull Street in downtown Montgomery, a few minutes from the state capitol. We started by helping neighbouring businesses avoid bad SEO contracts, and the request list grew until reviewing agencies became the whole job.

Today we work with owners in every state, but the approach has not changed: pick up the phone, read the contract, check the references, and tell people the truth about what search marketing can and cannot do for them.

Common questions

Answers before you ask

Do SEO companies pay to appear on your list?
No. Positions are earned through the scoring framework published on our methodology page. We do not accept payment for placement, and vendors are told this in writing before we start reviewing them.
How much should a small business budget for SEO?
Most U.S. small businesses see meaningful movement between $900 and $2,500 per month, depending on competition, how many locations they serve, and how much technical debt their website carries. Anything under roughly $500 per month rarely covers real strategist time.
Is the shortlist service really free?
Yes. A three-vendor shortlist plus a twenty-minute briefing call costs nothing. Deeper research reports, contract reviews and independent audits are paid services listed on our pricing page.
Do you work with agencies too?
We do, but only as research subjects and for benchmarking reports. Agencies cannot commission a favourable review, and any commercial relationship is disclosed on the vendor's profile.
